ROENTGENOGRAPHIC STUDY OF PRIMARY LUNG CANCER, AN ANALYSIS AND EVALUATION OF 100 CONSECUTIVE CASES



Abstract
During the period of 8 years from 1960 to 1967, more than 100 patients of lung cancer had been admitted and treated at National Medical Center. The roentgenographic findings and clinical symptoms of 100 cases were analyzed and following conclusions were obtaiined.
1. The sex ratio of 100 patients was 75 males to 25 females.
2. Age distribution was highest among the patients in 6th decade and three fourth were seen among the patients in 5th and 6th decades
3. All of the patients had symptoms including in 64, chest pain in 62 and hemoptysis in 48.
4. The chest roentgenogram was the most constantly accurate in all cases and positive findings in 48 tomograms and 10 bronchograms.
5. Bronchoscopy was carried out in 70 patients and showed positive findings in 62 cases.
6. Daniels, biopsy was positive in 53 out of 72 cases.
7. Cytologic study was positive in 45 cases.
8. The frequent roentgenographic findings were atelectasis in 70, pleural effusions in 37, bronchiectatic chagnes in 28 and abscess formations in 18 cases.
9. Metastatic rib destructions were seen in 6 cases, but no brain metastasis was proved.
10. 14 cases had tuberculous changes: s imultaneously.
11. Pneumonectomy was performed ¢¥in 24 cases and exploratory thoracotomy in 17 cases.
